From allotments to a market stall and a road trip in a van Sophie Abbott uses photographs and sketch books to record snippets from local allotments, lidos or a road trip in her van, and uses them to create bright and breathtakingly beautiful paintings that explore colour, mark-making and composition.
‘I am always experimenting with my use of colour, which is an intrinsic part of the painting for me. Marks are made, scratched into, painted over, sponged off and layered back on’.

Sophie paints spontaneously, trying not to focus on the end result too much, and letting brush marks, splotches and spills occur. They often become part of the work itself. Bold brush strokes highlight recognisable shapes or patterns, giving hints to the original inspiration.
All things bright and beautiful now includes acrylic on canvas.
